Artist Point is a scenic overlook on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in Wyoming, east-northeast of Yellowstone Falls, with a sweeping view into one of Yellowstone National Park’s most dramatic canyon landscapes. Its name was given in 1883 by photographer Frank Jay Haynes, who believed Thomas Moran had sketched his 1872 falls images from this spot. Later research found that Moran had actually worked from the north rim, but the mistaken name remained. The overlook became one of the canyon area’s best-known viewpoints, reflecting both its scenery and the way art, tourism, and legend shaped Yellowstone’s place names.
