Meriwether Lewis was one of the world's greatest explorers and led the Lewis and Clark Expedition across the American continent from 1803-1806. The explorers searched for new land that could be settled. Lewis died approximately eight miles east of this site in 1809 and is buried near the spot where he died. These stones covered Lewis' grave for over 150 years. They served as a base of a monument made by the State of Tennessee in 1848.
