Chalco Hills Recreation Area in northwestern Sarpy County, Nebraska, opened in 1988 as part of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District’s effort to unite flood control with public recreation. Covering 1,186 acres around the artificial Wehrspann Lake, whose dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it offers trails, picnic shelters, sports fields, playgrounds, fishing, boating, and seasonal winter activities. The lake also supports wildlife watching, with a waterfowl viewing platform and stocked fish populations. Beyond the shoreline, native plantings, an arboretum, and habitat for birds and white-tailed deer make the area part of a broader landscape restoration effort in Nebraska.
