Germans, mainly from Bavaria, began settling in Huron County before 1830, clearing land for small farms and log cabins while continuing the practice of their Catholic faith. The parish was established in 1836. In 1843, a small log chapel was built and dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. In 1846, the first church was constructed of rough-hewn logs and dedicated to St. Sebastian. That church was destroyed by fire in 1855, and a new church was erected in 1857. In 1923, the church was renovated and enlarged by adding the sanctuary and sacristies, and the 112 foot steeple, which housed these bells, was replaced by a dome capped steeple. St. Sebastian Church was closed in 2005 and razed in 2019, and the furnishings were disbursed.
