In Chiriaco Summit, California, this military history museum stands at the former entrance to Camp Young, headquarters of General George S. Patton Jr.'s 3rd Armored Division and part of the vast Desert Training Center. In March 1942, Patton was ordered to create a desert training center to prepare American troops for combat in North Africa, and although he spent less than four months there, the system he began shaped the training of more than one million soldiers. The site preserves the broader story of wartime desert training through exhibits on Patton, armored warfare, Camp Young, and the immense training ground that remained active until 1944.
