Pacheco State Park in California’s Diablo Range preserves a landscape where ranching history, open grasslands, and modern wind power coexist. Created in 1997 from the last piece of Rancho San Luis Gonzaga, it was named for Don Francisco Pérez Pacheco and came to the state through a bequest from his great-great-granddaughter, Paula M. Fatjó. The rancho had remained in the family since 1843 as a horse and cattle ranch. Much of the park remains closed because of limited trails and wind turbine safety concerns, but the open section offers miles of routes for hiking, riding, and biking, broad valley views, spring wildflowers, wildlife, and remnants of earlier settlement and travel.
