A locomotive was purchased in the early part of June, 1893, for use on a short line railroad constructed from the prison to the village of Folsom to haul supplies. In 1922, the walls around the prison were finally completed and guard towers were erected at strategic points along their lengthy stretch. At the southwest corner of the wall near Tower Eight, a large metal railroad gate was constructed for use by the Folsom State Prison Railroad. Prisoners built the gate in the Blacksmith Shop in the Lower Yard. The wall enclosed some forty-one acres and was built exclusively by convict labor. Because the prison faced the American River on one side as a natural barrier, only three sides were enclosed. Rock for the wall was quarried in the prison quarry, and man-powered derricks lifted the bigger slabs into place. The wall took 38 years to complete. The railroad gate was removed in 2003 and placed on the museum lawn area in November 2008.
