Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park near Summersville in Nicholas County, West Virginia preserves the site of the Battle of Carnifex Ferry on the rim of the Gauley River Canyon. The 156-acre park is valued for both its Civil War history and its dramatic setting, with the Patterson House Museum, three river overlooks, hiking trails, and picnic areas joining battlefield interpretation to canyon views. It is also one of the oldest state parks in the United States. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 as Carnifex Ferry State Park, it continues to serve as a place of remembrance through annual Civil War reenactments held after Labor Day.
