The Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State is a forensic anthropology research facility at Texas State University’s Freeman Ranch near San Marcos, Texas. Covering twenty-six acres and regarded as the world’s largest body farm, it is one of seven such facilities in the United States. Announced in 2008 after earlier site plans drew opposition, the center studies human decomposition in outdoor environments under varying climate and landscape conditions, including the effects of scavengers such as vultures. Its work helps estimate postmortem interval and strengthen forensic and medico-legal investigations, while also supporting student training, law enforcement research, and body donation-based scientific study.
