The Battle of Trevillians was fought here on June 11 and 12, 1864, when Confederate forces under Generals Wade Hampton, Fitzhugh Lee, and Thomas L. Rosser defeated Federal forces under Generals P.H. Sheridan and G.A. Custer. The battle involved 5,000 Confederates and 8,000 Federals. Casualties were 612 for the Confederates and 1,007 for the Federals. It was the greatest all-cavalry battle of the war and ended in a Confederate victory.
