Scofield Reservoir is a mountain water-storage and recreation reservoir on the Price River in central Utah whose development grew from irrigation efforts begun in 1883. After the Mammoth Dam project failed disastrously in 1917 and the first Scofield Dam, built in 1925 and 1926, partially failed in 1928, a new and larger dam was completed downstream in 1946 by the Bureau of Reclamation. The reservoir now serves irrigation, municipal, industrial, and flood-control needs, supporting farming, mining, and settlement in the Price River country. It also became a major recreation area known for trout fishing, ice fishing, camping, hunting, snowmobiling, and other year-round outdoor use.
