Fort Frederick, a colonial stone fort, was built in 1756 for the Province of Maryland by Gov. Horatio Sharpe to protect the frontier against French and Indians after Braddock’s defeat. It served as a detention camp for British prisoners from 1776 to 1783 and was occupied by Union troops from 1861 to 1862. George Washington was here in July 1756 and June 1758.
