James River National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Prince George County, Virginia, is a protected stretch of forest and wetlands along the James River managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Established in 1991, it was created to shield bald eagle nesting and roosting habitat from development while preserving an important riverside landscape for many species. The land also holds colonial-era history: part of it was once Powellbrooke Plantation, where Captain Nathaniel Powell, his wife, and ten others were killed in 1622, and it later became part of Merchant's Hope Plantation. Ongoing work includes wildlife research and habitat restoration.
