Rock Island State Park occupies an eight hundred eighty-three-acre peninsula at the meeting of the Collins River and Caney Fork, where waterfalls and river gorges define the landscape. Great Falls and the dam-created Twin Falls are its best-known natural features. The site also preserves a long record of using river power, from the Bosson Mill and the Falls City Cotton Mill to the hydroelectric Great Falls Dam, which began operating in 1917 and later passed to the Tennessee Valley Authority. With the reservoir’s creation, Rock Island developed into a recreation destination, and since the park’s establishment in 1969 it has combined scenic water features, industrial history, and outdoor access.
