Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante, with Father Dominguez and eight others, the first white men to enter the Great Basin, left Santa Fe on July 29, 1776, in an attempt to reach Monterey. After abandoning the attempt, the party passed through Cedar Valley on October 12 on its return to Santa Fe.
