The granary on the farm had a unique design because of its special use and function: heavy structural framing members were placed on the outside to withstand the weight of the grain, while the sheathing or planks were on the inside and incorporated into the grain bins. The granary was elevated off the ground to prevent ground moisture from spoiling the grain, and inside four large bins held grains such as wheat, oats and barley. At harvest time, the family rented one of the two threshing machines in the community to cut their grain and separate the usable grain kernels from the chaff, hired extra farmhands, and either brought in a cook wagon or set up a temporary kitchen to feed the workers. A large twenty-five foot by fifty foot hay barn once stood about thirty feet north of the granary. This open stick framed barn was flanked by lean-to barns on the east and west; the east barn housed horses and sheep and opened to a pasture, while the west barn housed milk cows. The hay and horse barns were destroyed in the early 1940s and not rebuilt, and the cow barn survived only a few more years before it too was destroyed.
