When the S.S. Dorchester was torpedoed on February 3, 1943, four chaplains gave their life jackets so that four soldiers might live. As the ship sank, the four were seen linked arm in arm, heads uplifted in prayer. They were Lt. G.L. Fox, Protestant; Lt. J.P. Washington, Catholic; Lt. C.V. Poling, Protestant; and Lt. A.D. Goode, Jewish. Congress awarded them the Special Medal for Heroism in 1961.
