Established on March 14, 1852, by the United States War Department, this fort protected frontier settlers against hostile Indians. It was named in honor of Captain Henry McKavett, who fell at the Battle of Monterey on September 21, 1846. Federal troops evacuated it on March 22, 1859, reoccupied it on April 1, 1868, and abandoned it on June 30, 1883.
