Discussion increasingly centered on changing the name of Indian Point. After debate among citizens, Mrs. John Henry Brown proposed the name Indianola, combining the first part of the current name, Indian, with ola, the Spanish word for wave. Indianola was approved on February 1, 1849. A sharp increase in the number of vessels entering Matagorda Bay had begun late in 1848.
