Blocher's Arkansas Battery became the focal point of Union attacks. A sergeant in the battery recalled that the enemy advanced with artillery under cover of infantry until within range of the battery, then opened a disastrous fire with both arms. With no support, Captain Blocher ordered his men to fall back and save themselves. About 200 yards to the rear, the men re-formed, then charged and drove the attackers from their guns, inflicting considerable loss.
