Crown Point Light at Crown Point, New York, began as an 1858 lighthouse on Lake Champlain near Fort St. Frédéric, built by Ellis and O'Neil as an octagonal stone tower with a keeper's dwelling. For the 1912 tercentenary of Samuel de Champlain's exploration, New York and Vermont transformed it into a memorial by rebuilding the tower in a classical style around its original spiral staircase and adding sculpture by Carl Augustus Heber and a plaque by Auguste Rodin. The station continued briefly as a lighthouse before the light was discontinued in 1926. Now isolated after the keeper's house was demolished, it endures as a rare blend of lighthouse, monument, and borderland history.
