The Model 770 Amphicar was named for its ability to reach seven knots in the water and 70 mph on land. A total of 3,878 Amphicars were manufactured in Germany from 1961 to 1968, and 3,046 of them were imported into the United States during that period. The Amphicar is rear-engined and uses a four-cylinder British-built Triumph Herald motor producing 43 hp. All Amphicars are convertibles and were offered to civilians in four colors: Beach White, Regatta Red, Lagoon Blue, and Fjord Green (Aqua). Two American presidents, Jimmy Carter and Lyndon B. Johnson, owned Amphicars, and Johnson invited friends and foreign dignitaries to his Texas ranch for joyrides in his car. Today, the Boathouse is the only location in the world offering captain-guided Amphicar tours around Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
