Union troops barricaded behind crossties routed the raiders. The raiders were ordered to torch the railroad bridge at all hazard but failed to carry out those orders. Union troops dug behind a barricade of fallen trees. The bulk of Jones' raiders launched three attacks here and were thrown back each time. Jones left in defeat. He ordered fewer than 100 raiders to dismount and go over to Palmer's Knob to attack the railroad bridge.
