Old St. Peter's in downtown The Dalles, Oregon, began as St. Peter's Church, built in 1897 and dedicated in 1898 to serve a Roman Catholic congregation until 1968. Saved from demolition in 1971, it became a museum and cultural venue while preserving much of the church's historic interior. Its red-brick Gothic Revival design, towering spire, and rooster weathervane made it a long-used city landmark for surveyors and riverboat pilots. Inside are painted sanctuary decorations by Theodore Braash, Carrara marble furnishings, a 533-pound bell, 34 Povey Brothers stained-glass windows, a ship-wood Virgin Mary statue, and a still-working 1927 Kilgen pipe organ.
