The Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail is a paved multi-use route along the American River from near downtown Sacramento to Beal’s Point at Folsom Lake, stretching thirty-two miles and serving both recreation and bicycle commuting. Its corridor reaches back to Jedediah Smith’s early nineteenth-century explorations east of Sacramento and to a late nineteenth-century trail marked by the Capital City Wheelmen before automobiles ended its commuter role. Revived and paved in the nineteen seventies, with a later extension into downtown Folsom, it links parks, river landscapes, and urban landmarks while preserving a relatively natural corridor. Used by about five million people annually, it is one of the Sacramento region’s defining outdoor spaces.
