Before this building was constructed in 1915, Sparta's post office operated from various buildings, including the nearby Masonic Temple. Congressman John Esch secured an initial federal appropriation for a post office around 1910, but not until 1914 was $60,000 set aside to construct this building. The construction of a federal building in Sparta marked a major development for the community, and the property was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
