Organized in 1850 and chartered on January 24, 1851, Caledonia Lodge No. 68, A.F. & A.M., founded Columbus Female Seminary on February 3, 1851, the first educational institution in Columbus. It built a two-story structure with the school downstairs and the lodge hall above. In 1857 it also founded Colorado College, the city's first public school.
