Gregg County was formed from Rusk and Upshur counties, created on April 12, 1873, and organized on June 28, 1873. It was named in honor of General John Gregg (1828-1864), who was a delegate to the Secession Convention and to the Provisional Congress of the Southern Confederacy, and a Confederate officer. Longview is the county seat.
