Hopper House was the birthplace and boyhood home of the eminent realist painter Edward Hopper. The Hopper family’s forebears came from Holland in 1652, and the artist’s grandfather built the house in 1858. After graduating from Nyack High School, Hopper moved to New York but returned to the family home throughout his life. Local citizens saved the house in 1970 and formed the Edward Hopper Landmark Preservation Foundation. Hopper is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
