Blacksmith and carpenter shops were common on historic rural farms, where, without stores to supply every need, most farmers were skilled enough to make rudimentary furniture and hand tools and to repair equipment and buildings. At Mabee Farm, the workshops are still used for repair and maintenance of the property, but their most important role is educational, with blacksmith and woodworking demonstrations forming a vital part of school programming and the visitor experience. Though not original to the property, these outbuildings are similar to the workshops that would have been used on the farm. The blacksmith shop is a c.1800 historic structure from Delmar, NY, and the carpenter's shop is a replica. Both buildings were placed here in the early 2000s.
