Norskedalen
History
Norskedalen near Coon Valley in western Wisconsin is a non-profit botanical garden and heritage center that joins the Coulee Region’s natural environment with the history of Norwegian immigration. Emerging from the Helga Gundersen Arboretum begun in 1960 and expanded through a 1977 land donation, it now includes more than 440 acres, about 9 miles of trails, native landscapes, historic buildings, museum exhibits, and educational programs. Its two sites include a year-round main campus with the Bekkum Homestead, arboretum, and visitor center, and a seasonal heritage site with more than 11 historic buildings, including the 1853 Skumsrud Cabin and the area’s first schoolhouse.
