A few miles west, emigrants reached the first of several trail splits leading to a Green River crossing where they camped for the evening. Even with South Pass behind them, travelers bound for Oregon or California still faced more than half their journey and the roughest portion of the trail, while those headed to Utah were less than a month from the end of their journey. Their passage through this country reflected the courage of people who went on to settle half the nation.
