This sea coast mortar weighed 17,200 pounds, had a 13-inch bore, and a maximum range of 4,325 yards, almost 2.5 miles. Cast in Ft. Pitt, PA in 1862, it was the largest piece of artillery used in the Civil War and was used for sea coast fortifications or on mortar boats for siege operations. It fired explosive projectiles weighing about 280 pounds to distances up to 4,325 yards. This mortar was recovered from a small canal off the Tensaw River in north Baldwin County.
