G.A.R. Memorial Hall in Hampton was built by the people of Franklin County solely to honor Civil War veterans. It was the first G.A.R. Memorial Hall in the state of Iowa and remains the only Civil War Memorial Hall in Iowa. The hall was financed by a tax levy and donations, and a local contractor built it with locally made bricks. There were 169 men from the area who left their homes and families to fight in the Civil War, and 44 died in the conflict. At that time, Hampton had a population of 300 and Franklin County had 1,200. The building is Gothic Revival in style, octagonal in shape, and has four cross gables on alternating sides. A painted white-zinc statue of a Union Civil War soldier stands on top and was restored in 1992. Stained glass windows incorporate Civil War motifs related to weaponry and soldier gear, and 10 marble tablets bearing the names of members of G.A.R. McKenzie Post No. 81 hang on the interior walls.
