Gas Port, formerly called James' Port, took the name suggested by George W. Clinton when he and a group of scientists came to this place on the canal and found that considerable quantities of gas bubbled through the water. On his return journey on May 26, 1826, he noted that the name Gas Port had been painted on the bridge. The picturesque name remained in use through the years.
