John Walker, Junior, known as “Chief Jack,” was a grandson of Nancy Ward and was prominent in the affairs of the Cherokee nation. He belonged to the party advocating a voluntary treaty for the removal of the Cherokees to the West. His murder by James Foreman in 1834 led to one of the most famous criminal trials in early Tennessee history. He married Emily Meigs, granddaughter of Return Jonathan Meigs, and he is buried here.
