Enchanted Rock is a massive pink granite dome in central Texas and the largest pink granite monadnock in the United States. Formed from exposed Town Mountain Granite laid down in the middle Precambrian, it rises above the surrounding plain after immense erosion stripped away nearby rock. Human presence around the dome stretches back at least 11,000 years, and Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche traditions regarded it as a place of spiritual power. Its nighttime creaks and groans helped inspire legends that shaped its name. Long celebrated in art, science, and travel imagery, the protected area is now preserved for recreation, archaeology, wildlife, and the site’s unusual blend of geology, history, and folklore.
