Cape Flattery Light stands on Tatoosh Island at the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Neah Bay, within the Makah Indian Reservation, and is the northwesternmost lighthouse on the contiguous West Coast. Built in 1854 and first lit in 1857, it became the third lighthouse in Washington Territory. A fog signal building with a steam whistle was added in 1872, and the light’s optics were later modernized. The historic light was decommissioned in 2008 in favor of a nearby solar-powered beacon. Cleanup began before transfer to the Makah Tribe, and despite its 2017 recognition as a National Treasure, the lighthouse and fog signal building still need urgent repairs.
