Poquoson, an ancient Indian word meaning a great marsh, was recorded in an English land patent issued to Captain Christopher Calthorpe on April 26, 1631. It is the oldest continuously named city in Virginia. The town was incorporated in 1952, and the city was chartered in 1975.
