Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge spans 1,116 acres on Great Bay’s eastern shore in Newington, New Hampshire. Created in 1992 on former weapons storage land from Pease Air Force Base after its 1991 closure, it preserves uplands, fields, forests, ponds, and open coastal water. The refuge is especially important for birdlife, serving as a migration and wintering area for bald eagles, peregrine falcons, black ducks, and several state-protected species including common loons, ospreys, and northern harriers. Its wildlife shifts with the seasons, from spring migrants to summer deer and songbirds to winter waterfowl and mammals, making it both a vital habitat and a valued place for observing wildlife.
