Awatovi Ruins is an archaeological site on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona preserving a pueblo founded after 1300 and the remains of the seventeenth-century Spanish mission of San Bernardo de Aguatubi. It grew into the largest and most important village in the Hopi area, linked to settlements across Antelope Mesa, First Mesa, and Homol'ovi. Awatovi was the first Hopi village reached and conquered by the Spanish in 1540, and later missionary efforts built a church over its main kiva, deepening tensions that culminated in destruction during the Pueblo Revolt and the pueblo’s final destruction by 1700. Later excavations made it important to both Pueblo history and the history of archaeology.
