Founded here in 1865 by Rev. J.L. Cooper as Spring Hill Male & Female Institute, the school was renamed Cooper Institute in 1873 and was among the first coeducational schools in Mississippi. Rev. Cooper was elected to the Mississippi Hall of Fame.
