Benton was the Yazoo County seat from 1829 to 1850. It was settled by Win. Y. Gadberry in 1828, and the first court was held in his log home. Benton was chartered in 1836. Nearby Cedar Grove Plantation was the home of Col. John Sharp and of famed Sen. John Sharp Williams.
