Those who remained in these woods long after the battle ended on May 7, 1864, are honored here. As Capt. J. M. Moore, commanding Cemeterial Branch, QMC, USA, observed, hundreds of graves on these battlefields were without any marks to distinguish them and so covered with foliage that visitors were unable to find the last resting place of those who had fallen.
