In 1982, Dr. Joseph Senne, Dr. David Summers, and Chancellor Joseph Marchello began developing a model of Stonehenge on the Missouri S&T campus. Senne, an avid astronomer, helped design the replica and made its astronomical calculations. He worked with Summers and the Waterjet Laboratory to carve the stones from Missouri granite. Weighing approximately 160 tons, the stones were precisely cut and placed, and Missouri S&T's Stonehenge was dedicated on the summer solstice in 1984. That same year, the National Society of Professional Engineers named Rolla's Stonehenge one of its top 10 outstanding engineering achievements. Senne joined the Missouri S&T faculty as an instructor in civil engineering in 1948 and served as chair of the department from 1965 to 1985.
