At Perryville, the Fifty-ninth Illinois Volunteers, commanded by Maj. Joshua Winters, suffered 113 casualties of 325 engaged, and the Seventy-fifth Illinois, under Lieut. Col. John E. Bennett, lost 225 of 700. Serving with Col. Michael Gooding's Thirteenth Brigade, the regiments came to the aid of Maj. Gen. Alexander McD. McCook's Corps and coolly resisted vicious charges, firing with terrible effect.
