Sutton Place was believed to have been constructed about 1868 for the Lombard family. Seneca Merrill later obtained the house and added the tower to the original building; he was married to Viola Sutton's grandmother. John Pitkin Sutton was born in 1906, and in 1936 he married Viola Harding Sutton, a well known first grade teacher; they rented an apartment in the house and later purchased it. About 1954, John and Viola turned the house into a tourist business, renting four rooms with one bath shared by guests. In 1983, Donald and Carmela Kelsea purchased the building and turned the downstairs into a fine restaurant known as The Sutton Place. In 2008, Cindy and David Hicks purchased the building and carried out substantial renovations. A beauty parlor now occupies the front portion, an optometrist the back suite, and upstairs there is both an office for a local logging operation and an apartment. Anyone who dined at the Sutton House fondly remembers long time server Thelma Daley telling diners to clean their plate or no dessert.
