Lindorf Ozburn, born in Jackson County, Illinois in 1823, married Diza Glenn, a cousin of John A. Logan. After serving with Logan in the Mexican War, he joined the 31st Illinois Infantry at the beginning of the Civil War and became its colonel when Logan was promoted to general. When Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Ozburn's long-held beliefs led him to resign his commission. In 1864, William Weaver, whom Ozburn had disciplined while in the service, killed him in Carbondale, Illinois. Weaver was arrested and housed in the jail that once stood on this corner, where a mob later stormed the jail and killed Weaver.
