White Pines Forest State Park in Ogle County preserves Illinois’ southernmost remaining stand of native white pine trees, with part of the forest receiving the state’s highest legal protection in 2001. Efforts to protect White Pines Woods began in 1903, failed at first, and succeeded in 1927 after years of public support. Pine Creek and Spring Creek shape the park’s sandstone cliffs, ravines, and unusual vehicular fords. During the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps workers built much of its rustic character, including the historic lodge and cabins. As Illinois’ third-oldest state park, it is also valued for rare plants and diverse river-valley habitat.
