Pilgrim Memorial State Park in Plymouth was created in 1920 during the 300th anniversary observances of the Pilgrims’ landing and centers on Plymouth Rock and the National Monument to the Forefathers. Owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, it was reshaped through landfill and shoreline changes that formed arms of land around the rock. The classical portico over Plymouth Rock, designed by McKim, Mead and White, was completed during this work, and other memorials were added. The park’s importance is chiefly commemorative, preserving a symbolic New England site and connecting it to memorials around Plymouth Bay.
